Cortisol is the primary glucocorticoid produced by the adrenal cortex gland. Ninety percent of the secreted Cortisol in circulation throughout the body is bound to protein, mainly to Cortisol - binding globulin (cbg). Cortisol’s principle physiological actions are: increase hepatic glyconeogenesis, increase hepatic glycogenolysis, increase protein catabolism, and inhibit ACTH secretion (negative feedback mechanism), renal excretion.
