Wolf Berry: The wolfberry is a deciduous woody perennial plant, growing up to 1 m high. The thorny stem bear green lance shaped leaves. Wolfberry blooms with small purple flowers. The ripe wolfberry fruits turn orange red, have an oblong shape and are about 10 mm long. Wolfberries are one of the most important traditional medicines in China. Wolfberry fruits have been used since ancient times in China as general tonic, to protect the liver, to improve vision, to strengthen weak legs and to promote longevity.
Rhizoma Polygonati: Fleshy, and tuberous, like a chicken's head, usually several of them gathered together, 3-I l cm long. Surface dark-brown, nodes invisible, with little discoidal stem P. cyrtonema: Rhizome transverse, long, with short branching, ginger-like shape. Surface dark-brown, stem scars round and large. Prepared as irregular pieces. Both are sweet in taste, mild in nature, and attributive to kidney and spleen channels. Recently, also used for coronary disease, used together with Radix Paeoniae Rubra; for leukopenia, used together with Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae; and adolescent myopia or drug-induced deafness.
Epimedium: Hugely popular as garden plants for centuries in Japan, Epimedium are only just beginning to garner attention in the West. While they vary somewhat in their respective hardiness, all are essentially dwellers of the forest floor, and, as such, all require fundamentally similar conditions of moist, free draining, humus rich soil and cool shade, with some shelter for the newly emerging leaves. The Chinese call it Yin Yang Huo, which loosely means "licentious goat plant." Legend has it that the name horny goat weed came from a herder who noticed his goats becoming more sexually active after eating the plant.
Korean Ginseng: The term ginseng refers to several species of the genus Panax . For more than 2,000 years, the roots of this slow-growing plant have been valued in Chinese medicine. The two most commonly used species are Asian ginseng ( Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer), which is almost extinct in its natural habitat but is still cultivated, and American ginseng ( P . quinquefolius L.), which is both harvested from the wild and cultivated. Panax ginseng should not be confused with Siberian ginseng ( Eleutherococcus senticosus ). In Russia, Siberian ginseng was promoted as a cheaper alternative to ginseng and was believed to have identical benefits. However, Siberian ginseng does not contain the ginsenosides found in the Panax species, which are believed to be active ingredients and have been studied and that is why we chose KOREAN ginseng. Several studies report that ginseng may boost the immune system, improve the effectiveness of antibiotics in people with acute bronchitis, and enhance the body's response to flu vaccines.
Poria: Has a history in Asian medicine of “draining dampness,” for insomnia, to balance electrolytes, and “invigorate” the spleen. Poria has been known as the “medicine of immortality.” A legend about Bok-Ryung, the Korean name for poria, tells of an upper class daughter, Ki-Ryung, falling in love with a servant, Ki-Bok, which at the time was strictly forbidden. They decided to run away together, but Ki-Ryung became ill. In Ki-Bok's search for medicinal herbs, he shot a rabbit, followed it, and eventually found the arrow stuck in a hole in the ground near a pine tree. Here, Ki-Bok discovered a mushroom, which he believed was a blessing from God to cure his love. He prepared an infusion of this mushroom, Ki-Ryung drank it, and was cured. This mushroom was named “Bok-Ryung” from their names. 2
Cordyceps Sinensis: The Cordyceps species most widely used as a dietary supplement, naturally grows on the back of the larvae of a caterpillar from the moth Hepialus armoricanus Oberthur found mainly in China, Nepal, and Tibet. The mycelium invades the caterpillar and eventually replaces the host tissue. The stroma (fungal fruit body) grows out of the top of the caterpillar. The remaining structures of the caterpillar along with the fungus are dried and sold as the dietary supplement cordyceps.
Cnidium: A plant specie that Grows throughout China. A typical cnidium is round, dark yellow in color, and has a pleasant aroma. According to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, cnidium seeds are characterized as acrid, bitter and warm.Cnidium seeds are most commonly used to treat itchy skin, rashes, eczema and ringworm, typically in the genital area. These conditions are treated by grinding cnidium seeds with water into a solution and applying to the skin. Cnidium seeds are also taken internally to treat vaginal discharges and/or increase sexual potency. Cnidium is often combined with herbs such as cuscuta and schisandra to treat infertility and impotence; in many classical traditional Chinese medicine texts, cnidium is used as a form of aphrodisiac.
